ABMR 2024 Early-Stage Investigator Program

The Academy of Behavioral Medicine Research (ABMR) is currently accepting applications for the ABMR 2024 Early-Stage Investigator Program. This exciting opportunity provides leadership training, mentorship, and networking opportunities to promising behavioral medicine researchers. It is designed to build an active, engaged support network of near peers. Scholars who are underrepresented in the scientific workforce as defined by the NIH are particularly encouraged to apply.

ABMR is a professional organization of distinguished mid-career and senior career scholars elected by their peers for outstanding contributions to behavioral medicine research. They hold an annual meeting for members each June – this is a small, single-track meeting that is an exciting forum in which they discuss innovative ideas and cutting-edge research and grapple with some of the most pressing topics and greatest challenges in the field. The ESI program that began in 2021 brings 10-12 ESIs to their annual meeting for leadership training, mentoring and networking with our members.

ABMR is seeking ESIs with a K-award or first R-series award from NIH or equivalent career development awards or independent research awards from other funding agencies who are doing research in behavioral or social sciences with a focus on health outcomes (broadly defined).

For more information, please view the RFA.

The application portal is open and we are accepting applications through Friday, December 1, 2023.

For questions, please email Susan Everson-Rose or ABMR.

NIMHD Designates People with Disabilities as a Population with Health Disparities

Eliseo J. Pérez -Stable, M.D., Director of the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities, announced the designation of people with disabilities as a population with health disparities.

The decision was made in consultation with Robert Otto Valdez, Ph.D., Director of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, after careful consideration of the National Advisory Council on Minority Health and Health Disparities final report, input from the disability community, and a review of the science and evidence. This designation is one of several steps NIH is taking to address health disparities faced by people with disabilities and ensure their representation in NIH research.

As part of the effort to support research in this area, NIMHD also released a notice of funding opportunity (NOFO) to advance the science of disabilities research.

Virtual Workshop: Learning Community for Writing, Dissemination & Reviewing:

November 11th, 2023 | 5 p.m. to 8p.m. EST

PCHP (Progress in Community Health Partnerships), in partnership with Morehouse School of Medicine Prevention Research Center and CCPH (Community-Campus Partnerships for Health), are piloting a Writing, Dissemination and Reviewer Learning Community alongside the 2023 American Public Health Association’s (APHA) Annual Meeting on Saturday, November 11, 2023.  The workshop builds upon an earlier Writing and Dissemination Institute held in 2017 at APHA.  It will support community-patient-academic partners and teams to develop and enhance skills to contribute to academic writing in peer reviewed journals; as well as increase the pipeline of community-patient external reviewers for PCHP and other peer reviewed journals.

The November 11 workshop agenda is designed for participants to learn and practice skills through a dynamic skills-based curriculum, interactive presentations, small group sessions, coaching, and best practices and resources.  Small group facilitators will support skills participants want to develop, and practice related to writing for academic publication.
